PSX 2010: Yakuza 0
I knew from watching every Yakuza preview video on the PS.Blog that I was going to absolutely love Yakuza 0. Unfortunately, it just wasn't going to happen for me.
I've played the first Yakuza - which is also the first video game I have played (you'll find out what the first video game I played was in my entry from 2009) - and it's a classic. Everything about it - the story, the gameplay, the presentation, the settings - is so perfect that it has become one of my favorite games. It has more heart than any other game, and, as a result, I felt that it was the only thing I wanted from Yakuza 0. Everything else was just "meh" and not worth my time or attention.
For those unfamiliar, Yakuza 0 is a remake of the original Yakuza. The original was released on the PS2 in 2006 and was the first in the series to use both the then-new PlayStation 3 and the now-standard PSP-3000. In it, a young man named Ryu Ga Gotoku (or "Ryu Ga Gotoku") is ordered by the Yakuza to take a job from a gang lord. Unfortunately, this gang lord has a dispute with someone who he thinks may be a rival for the top spot in the Yakuza, so he wants Ryu to "rescue" him from the rival gang, thus removing him as a threat. It's a simple premise, and the original was one of the best games in the series. The atmosphere was amazing, the characters were great (including the female characters), the gameplay was wonderful, the music was fantastic, and the story was tense and gripping.
